The Search For Rochambeau's Route
The Search For Rochambeauâs Route
WATERBURY â The Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center invites the public to a free program on Thursday, July 27, at noon, that will explore archaeological finds discovered as researchers traced the route of Comte de Rochambeau during 1781 and 1782 as he made his historic Revolutionary War march across Connecticut.
Dr Bruce Clouette of Public Archeology Survey Team, Inc (PAST) will discuss the discoveries that have been made about Rochambeau in the course of research throughout the Northeast states.
PAST is a private, nonprofit research and public education organization based in Mansfield. It has completed more than 500 projects since 1976, most of them in southern New England, ranging from small-scale archaeological surveys to complicated multicomponent studies.
With a grant from the Connecticut Historical Commission, PAST engaged in intensive documentation and archaeological research to identify the march route and campsites of the French Army under Rochambeau.
This program is offered in conjunction with the museumâs current exhibit, âFrom the Farm to the Front: Our Towns and the Revolutionary War,â which continues through September 3.
The Mattatuck Museum is at 144 West Main Street, with additional parking directly behind the museum on Park Place. Call 203-753-0381 for information.
