Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*The bake sale will be July 16 from 9 to 10 am. Bring donations of baked goods in before that time.

*Every Tuesday at 2 pm jump in the van for ice cream. Sign up at the front desk.

*An informational talk on heart disease and women will be Tuesday, July 17, at 1 pm. Ann Waldman, RN, from Connecticut Nursing Services will provide information, support groups, services, and literature to live a long, heart healthy life.

*Bingo is Wednesday, July 18, at 1 pm.

*The Lunch and Learn Series for Friday, July 20 has been canceled.

*“Fireworks and Fountains” will be at the Nemours Mansion and Gardens in Delaware, and then travel to the QVC home shopping network in Westchester, Penn., on the weekend of July 20–22.

 

Upcoming Programs

*The Golden Noters are looking for people to join the chorus for a weekly sing-along of the oldies with Ethel Kaufman every Monday at 1 pm.

*Bingo will be Tuesday, July 24, at 1 pm.

*Commission on Aging meets third Monday of every month at 5 pm.

*On Tuesday, August 7, at 1 pm, Blair Soucy, vice president of the Bristol Coin Club and an ANA life member, will talk about the US Mint, gold and silver bullion market, and coin and currency collecting. Bring in any coins or currency for an idea of value and rarity. Reservations required.

*Depart for Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Rhode Island for Johnny cakes and coffee Thursday, August 9. Lunch is at Matunuck Oyster Bar overlooking Potter’s Pond. Learn how shellfish are cultivated, possibly putting on a pair of waders to see an oyster farm in process. Cost is $90; depart at 7 am.

*On Friday, August 10, at 11:30, depart for Eicher’s Cove and bring your picnic lunch.

*On Friday, August 10, lunch is at Shadows on the Hudson overlooking the Hudson River; then onto the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge over the river; and lastly, enjoy a two-hour cruise on the Mystere. Departure time is 8:45; cost is $83.

*Giant Tag Sale and Car Wash fundraiser is on Saturday, August 18, 9 am to 3 pm. Donate unwanted “treasures” no earlier than August 10 or reserve a table to rent for $25.

Day Trips

*The next Mohegan Sun Casino bus trip will be Thursday, July 26, at 8 am. The cost of $30 includes a $15 food coupon and three $5 bets.

*The Inn at Villa Bianca’s annual luau is Wednesday, August 15, 11:30 am–2 pm. All you can eat family-style luncheon, entertainment, and dancing for $29.95. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Annual Summer Picnic at Holiday Hill is Monday, August 20, 9 am to 4 pm. Unlimited buffet, entertainment by Vinnie Carr with dancing and singing, bingo all day, bocce, horseshoes, mini golf, heated pool, and more. Cost is $28 and must be paid by August 6. Depart at 8 am.

*Westchester Broadway Theatre luncheon trip to see Can-Can on Wednesday, September 5 for $90.

Overnight Trips

*Upcoming Trips: Gold Mines & Ghost Towns in the Colorado High Country, August 11–18; a Nova Scotia cruise on the Carnival Glory September 3–8, and tour Italy: Sorrento, Naples/Pomell, the Isle of Capri, and more on October 11–19. Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, line dancing; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 2:15 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga; 1:30 Wii bowling.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10:30 am, quilting or sewing; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

July 16–20

Monday: Cold cut grinder with turkey, salami, ham and cheese, mustard and mayo, coleslaw, pickle, brownie.

Tuesday: Cheese baked ziti, parmesan cheese, sausage, tossed salad, Italian dressing, Italian bread, apple juice, peaches.

Wednesday: Chicken noodle soup, hot open turkey sandwich on oat bread with gravy and cranberry sauce, mixed vegetables, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Thursday: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce or baked chicken with dill sauce, orzo pilaf, broccoli, wheat dinner roll, grapes.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, July 23: Herb baked chicken, brown rice pilaf, California blend vegetables, pumpernickel bread, fresh melon.

Tuesday, July 24: Corn chowder, seafood salad plate with lettuce, tomato and three-bean salad, Portuguese roll, mandarin oranges.
