Philip Lincoln Michel

Philip Lincoln Michel, 95, a Sikorsky Helicopter pioneer, died July 10, at Apple Rehab/ Shelton Lakes, Shelton. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., February 12, 1917.

He graduated from New York University with a BS degree and master’s degree in aeronautical engineering. His early career was with Brewster Aeronautical Corp, Republic Aviation Corporation, and Grumman Aviation. He was later a full professor at North Carolina State University before joining Sikorsky. Mr Michel was an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a member of the American Helicopter Society.

He retired from Sikorsky Aircraft after serving with Sikorsky as chief of advanced research since 1952. He also taught two courses in airplane design at Princeton University for three years in his retirement.

He loved playing the violin and played with the Norwalk Symphony for many years, and was a prolific sculptor. He was also a member of the Newtown Fourth Grade Book Buddies from ages 92 to 94, led by teacher and dear friend, Lea Attanasio.

He leaves his daughter, Kathleen Weller, and son-in-law Gary Weller of Newtown; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his sisters and brothers-in-law Kathryn and William Sennello, and Joseph and Lorraine Braun. Mr Michel was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Esther; and his daughter, Esther Marie Lyons.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, July 15, from 2 to 4 pm, with funeral services immediately following at 4 pm, at Dennis & D’Arcy-Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford.
