Gold Sluggers Begin Travel Careers With Wins

Newtown Gold 8 year old baseball team members began their travel careers with an impressive 10-4 win over Woodbury this week. After going down by a run in the top of the first, Newtown stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.

Sean O’Sullivan led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. David Braun followed with a single to set the stage for Hayden Miller, who delivered a crushing run scoring double. George Sandercox followed with a two run scoring single on a deep blast to left field. Consecutive singles from James Celentano, Tyler Harrison, and Jackson Newsom capped the rally.

Woodbury scored two more runs to close the gap to 5-3. Newtown once again answered back with their bats with another five-run barrage. Jackson Newsom started the attack with a leadoff single followed by several other hard hit balls put in play that Woodbury failed to field cleanly. Hayden Miller once again delivered a mammoth run-scoring double to finish the scoring.

Sean O’Sullivan finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hayden Miller finished 3-for-3, with two doubles and two RBI, and Jackson Newsom finished 2-3 with two RBIs.  Benjamin Ochs delivered an RBI groundout and Edwin Tout also contributed a single and an RBI. The Gold defense was equally impressive with outstanding plays by Matt Williams with two assists in the infield. Tyler Harrison made an outstanding head’s up play from the catcher’s position when he fired the ball down to third base to pick off a Woodbury runner who strayed too far from the base. James Celentano caught a deep fly ball in right center and Jack Petersen had two outstanding plays at first base, a diving catch on a pop up and a nice grab on a hard liner. David Braun had two nice putouts at first base and caught a pop-up at shortstop to end the game.
