DUI Arrest

Police said they responded to a report of erratic driving on South Main Street at about 9:45 pm on July 1, after which they stopped motorist John Smolen, 68, of Trumbull near 151 South Main Street to investigate.

Police said they charged Smolen with driving under the influence.

After processing, police released Smolen on $200 bail for a July 17 court appearance.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant against her, Christie Caruso, 24, of 5 Crow’s Nest Lane turned herself over to police at the police station on the afternoon of July 6, and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction, stemming from an original charge of traveling unreasonably fast.

When a motorist receives such an infraction, he/she has the option of mailing in a fine for the violation or appealing the case in court. If a motorist takes no action, police receive a warrant for the person on a charge of failure to respond to an infraction.

After processing, police released Caruso on $200 bail for a July 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Toddy Hill Crash

Police report that motorist Brian Sorrentino, 24, of Washington, Maine, who was driving a 1999 Saturn SL sedan on Toddy Hill Rd at about 3:17 am on July 7, was involved in an vehicular accident. The incident occurred near Toddy Hill Rd’s intersection with Turkey Roost Rd.

Police said that after receiving a report about the crash, they went there to investigate and found no driver present.

Police said that Sorrentino was returned to the accident scene by his friends, after which police issued Sorrentino a summons on charges of evading responsibility and failure to keep to the right on a curve.

Police said they released Sorrentino on a written promise at appear in court on July 17.

Warrant

Police report that at about 3:42 pm on July 5, they charged Ashleigh Studwell, 24, of 160 Mt Pleasant Road on a warrant, lodging charges of second-degree failure to appear in court and sixth-degree larceny.

Police said that the larceny charge stems from a past incident that occurred in West Hartford.

Police said that Studwell was released on $2,500 bail for a July 19 court appearance.

Mt Pleasant Road

Police report that motorist Shannon Slater, 20, of Patterson, N.Y., was driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria sedan westward on Mt Pleasant Road, about 400 feet east of its intersection with Hawleyville Road, at about 2:32 pm on July 7, when Slater lost control of the auto and struck some metal guardrailing along the right road shoulder.

Slater was not injured. Police said that Slater was traveling unreasonably fast.

Pontiac/Audi Crash

A two-vehicle collision occurred on Botsford Hill Road near its intersection with Swamp Road at about 12:46 pm on July 2, according to police.

Police said that motorist Michael Fanelli, 20, of Derby, who was driving a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire coupe westward on Botsford Hill Rd, drove over the road’s center line and then collided with motorist Mario DeVivo, 71, of 10 Old Castle Dr, who was driving a 2005 Audi A-8 coupe.

Fanelli received minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene, police said. Police said they issued Fanelli an infraction for a traffic violation.

Three Vehicles

A three-vehicle accident occurred in front of the police station at 3 Main Street at about 4:11 pm on July 6.

Police said that motorist Richard Mariani, 57, of 32 Little Brook Lane, who was driving a 2007 Saturn Ion sedan, pulled out of a driveway at the police station and was intending to make a left turn to head northward on Main Street, when the Saturn struck a northbound 2010 Ford Fusion sedan driven by Danielle Voight, 26, of 12 Washbrook Road.

Following that impact, the Saturn then struck a 2002 Lexus IS-300 sedan, which was waiting on southbound Main Street and driven by motorist Johnny Pech, 21, of Naugatuck, police said.

There were no injuries, Police said they issued Mariani a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Evading

Police report that at about 4:30 pm on July 5, they responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on Glen Road, near its intersection with Cherry Street.

Police said that motorist Anthony Ciminera, 65, of Southbury, who was driving a 1990 Buick Rivera coupe on Glen Road, struck some guardrailing and then sideswiped a 2008 Toyota Corolla sedan driven by a local woman, after which Ciminera left the scene.

There were no injuries. Newtown police said Southbury police located Ciminera, after which Newtown police charged him with evading responsibility and with failure to drive to the right.          

Ciminera was released on $1,000 bail for a July 19 court appearance, according to police.

VW Vs Infiniti

Police report that motorist Nicole Nonnenmacher, 19, of 6 Patriot Ridge Road was driving a 2004 Volkswagen Passat station wagon northward on Patriot Ridge Road and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road at about 3 pm on July 8.

At that time, motorist Jonathan Kaplan, 26, of New York City was driving a 2011 Infiniti QX-56 SUV westward on Walnut Tree Hill Road, police said.

The Volkswagen then entered the intersection and collided with the Infiniti, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Nonnenmacher a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Highway Crash

State police report that motorist Kofi Boateng, 52, of East Hartford was driving a 1993 Toyota Corolla sedan westward on Interstate 84 and was in the right lane of three lanes as Boateng approached the Exit 10 interchange at about 12:43 am on July 6.

The Toyota then drifted off the pavement of the Exit 10 off-ramp and went across some turf, after which it crossed over the on-ramp and collided with a tree on an embankment, state police said.

Boateng was not injured. State police said they issued Boateng a written warning for a traffic violation and then seized Boateng’s driver’s license because Boateng has been involved in several recent accidents and has been the subject of traffic stops by police.

Boateng’s driving privileges are subject to reexamination by the state Department of Motor Vehicles, state police said.

Plate Reader

While on patrol about 10:25 am on July 9, police, while using their automated electronic marker plate reader, detected a vehicle that was listed as having a cancelled registration, so they stopped the driver on Toddy Hill Road, near its intersection with Berkshire Road.

Police said that after investigating, they charged motorist Ian Gonzalez, 24, of Danbury with driving an unregistered vehicle and with driving with a suspended license.

Police said they released Gonzalez on $100 bail for a July 24 court appearance.

Intersection Accident

Police report that motorist Elizabeth Danielle O’Brien, 21, of 8 Merlin’s Lane, who was driving a 2006 Ford Escape SUV, was waiting in traffic on northbound South Main Street, just south of its intersection with Mile Hill Road, at about 4:41 pm on July 9, when northbound motorist James J. Gorman III, 31, of Parksville, N.Y., who was driving a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck, struck the rear end of the Ford.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Gorman a written warning for following too closely.

Sedan Vs Motorcycle

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Buttonball Drive and Pine Street at about 6 pm on July 8, police report.

The accident involved motorist Amanda Black, 23, of 9 Elana Lane, who was driving a 2011 Mazda 3 sedan, and motorcyclist Richard Longo, 46, of Oxford, who was riding a 2001 Kawasaki ZRX-1200-R, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members responded to the scene, but both drivers refused medical attention, police said.

Police said they issued Black an infraction for failure to grant the right of way. Police said they gave Longo an infraction for driving without a license.

Trespassing

Police said that they were called at about 5:30 pm on July 8 to investigate a report of trespassing on property owned by First Light Hydro Generating Company at 72 Alberts Hill Road, near Lake Lillinonah.

Police said they issued infractions to three Bridgeport residents on charges of simple trespassing, They are: Alfredo Gonzalez, 68; Maria Gonzalez, 65, and Ana Alvarez, 26, police said.

The people charged may either pay a fine by mail or appeal the charge in court.

Truck Hits Pole

Police said that Angel Marrero, 26, of New Britain was driving a 1997 Chevrolet C-1500 pickup truck westward on Nunnawauk Road about 11:55 am on July 10, when the passenger side of the truck sideswiped a utility pole on the right road shoulder near 16 Nunnawauk Road.

Marrero was not injured. Police said they issued Marrero an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Church Hill Road

Police report that motorist Rita Dieck, 78, of 38 Echo Valley Road was driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy SUV southward on The Boulevard at about 1:50 pm on July 10 and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Church Hill Road.

At that time, motorist D. Hudson, 24, of Bridgeport was driving a 2006 Ford Focus sedan westward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The Subaru then entered the intersection in attempting to make a left turn onto eastbound Church Hill Road, police said.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Dieck an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Moving Violations

Police said they stopped motorist Eliza Pietron, 37, of 18 Whippoorwill Hill Road about 6:38 am on July 10 near 9 South Main Street to investigate.

Police said they charged Pietron with traveling unreasonably fast and with driving with a suspended license. Police said they released Pietron on a written promise to appear in court on July 24.

Motorcycle Crash

At about 1:54 pm on July 7, Elijah Montalvo, 17, of Danbury was driving a motorcycle on eastbound Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center, after which he entered Riverside Road, police said.

Montalvo then lost control of the motorcycle near 4 Riverside Road and the front tire of the vehicle struck some curbing, police said. Montalvo was then thrown from the motorcycle and landed in a grassy area, police said.

Montalvo was transported by ambulance for treatment of injuries, police report.

Police said they issued Montalvo an infraction on charges of making a restricted turn, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving a motorcycle without valid insurance, and driving a motorcycle without a valid motorcycle license endorsement. Police said they also verbally warned Montalvo for driving without a license.

Rear-Ender

Motorist Gregory Hall, 38, of Cheshire was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck westward on Church Hill Road and then stopped at a traffic signal at that street’s intersection with the Exit 10 eastbound ramps for Interstate 84 at about 11 am on July 11, police report.

Westbound motorist Laura Dasilva, 58, of Southbury, who was driving a 2008 Hyundai Elantra sedan, then struck the rear end of the Ford, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Dasilva a written warning for following too closely.
