Burglary

Police report that an intruder into a Sandy Hook home activated a residential burglar alarm about 3:11 am July 12. Police said the intruder had left the scene of the break-in before they arrived in response to the alarm. The burglar used force to gain entry to the premises. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

MV Charges

Police said they stopped motorist Daniel Riley, 42, of Bridgeport on the evening of July 14 on Mile Hill Road. Police lodged charges of speeding and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension against Riley. Police released Riley for a July 31 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Charge

Police report that while patrolling Church Hill Road early on the morning of July 14 they observed motorist John J. McCarthy, 61, of Brewster, N.Y., driving erratically eastbound on the overpass above Interstate 84.

Police said McCarthy was weaving within the eastbound travel lane and almost struck a utility pole.  Police stopped McCarthy on Washington Avenue and investigated, charging him with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and driving with high-beam headlamps on.

After processing, police released McCarthy for a July 31 appearance ion Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Rearrest Warrant

Police report they served a rearrest warrant against Richard J. Novia, 42, of 18 Lake Road on the afternoon of July 13 in connection with a past incident.

Police charged Novia with failure to respond to an infraction and illegal dumping. Police said Novia initially was charged with illegal dumping on March 3, but he failed to respond to the violation, resulting in the rearrest warrant. The charge alleges Novia illegally placed garbage in a private dumpster at a Berkshire Road business.

Police said they released Novia on a $110 bond for a July 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Hemlock Road

Police said that in response to a report about the presence of a suspicious vehicle on the dead-end Hemlock Road about 8 pm July 15, they went there and investigated. Police said they found Steven Buchholz, 18, of 104 Water View Drive, and Carrie Hicks, 18, of 43-A Botsford Hill Road in a wooded area nearby.

Police said they charged Buchholz with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and simple trespassing. Police said they charged Hicks with simple trespassing.

Buchholz is scheduled to appear in court July 31 to answer the charges, police said.

Dog Struck

Motorist Thomas J. McGovern, 53, of West Redding, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina westbound on Sugar Street near Juniper Road about 10 pm July 7, when a dog ran out into the road in front of the auto near 20 Sugar Street, police said. McGovern was unable to avoid striking the animal, which was killed in a collision with the auto, police said. McGovern was not injured, police said.

Route 34

Police said motorist Melissa Anselmo, 18, of Brewster, N.Y., was driving a 1992 Honda Civic eastbound on Route 34 about 1:15 pm July 14, when she stopped behind a 1999 Honda CRV driven by Timothy Rothman, 21, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., which had stopped a red traffic signal at the intersection of Route 34 at Toddy Hill Road.

After the traffic signal turned green, the CRV started moving forward and then stopped, after which the Civic struck the CRV from behind, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Rothman to Danbury Hospital for treatment of neck pain, police said. Police issued Anselmo a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Road Rage

State police report an incident of road rage on Interstate 84 on the evening of July 9, which resulted in five charges being pressed against a Danbury man.

State police said they received a report of a road rage incident about 8 pm in which they were dispatched to westbound I-84, about 1,300 feet west of the Exit 10 on-ramp. State police said that on reaching the scene they saw motorist Rory L. Culhane, 41, of 5 Fairfield Ridge, Danbury, driving a vehicle which matched the description in the report they had received.

Culhane was swerving within the road’s left lane and making gestures to a tractor-trailer truck driver, state police said.

State police said they stopped Culhane and investigated, charging him with failure to drive in the established lane, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, misuse of marker plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and failure to insure a motor vehicle.

State police said they held Culhane for an appearance the following day in Danbury Superior Court.

Truck Hit

State police report that a 1987 International truck driven by Royal E. Gladding, 44, of Ansonia was parked on the right road shoulder of Interstate 84 about 4,000 feet west of Exit 9 about 2 pm July 10 when an unknown passing truck struck the exterior rear-view mirror of the parked truck. Gladding was not injured. State police are investigating.

Blowout

State police said motorist Silva DeSouza, 31, of Alexandria, Va., who was driving a 1990 Subaru in the right lane of eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, about 7 am July 9, had a tire on the Subaru blow out, resulting in the Subaru veering to the left and striking an eastbound 1988 Ford Escort driven by Jeffrey Lambert, 21, of Mahopac, N.Y. No injuries were reported.

 

High Bridge Crash

Motorist Christina A. Arroyo, 18, of 203 Hanover Road was driving a 1984 Honda Civic westbound on High Bridge Road about 4:40 pm July 16, when the auto veered across the eastbound lane and struck a tree along the eastbound road shoulder, police said. The auto was carrying four teenage passengers, police said. There were no injuries, according to police. Police issued Arroyo an infraction ticket on a charge of making a restricted turn.

Marijuana

Police said that while driving on Boulevard Extension about 2:30 pm July 17, they spotted a vehicle parked beneath the Interstate 84 bridge that crosses above the road. Police said they stopped and spotted Matthew Seaman, 18, of 95 Hanover Road sitting alongside some nearby railroad tracks. Police said they found Seaman to be in possession of a small bag of marijuana and a pipe. Police charged Seaman with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police released him on a promise to appear July 26 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Currituck Crash

Motorist Tristan Vandervoot-Levy, 18, of 86 Toddy Hill Road was driving a 1988 Ford station wagon northbound on Currituck Road, north of its intersection with Butterfield Road, about 2:20 am July 15, when the front end of the Ford struck a tree along the southbound road shoulder of Currituck Road, coming to rest along a stone wall, police said.

There were no injuries, police said. Police issued Vandervoot-Levy an infraction ticket on a charge of making an improper turn.

Plates Charge

Police said that while on patrol about 10:30 pm July 17, they conducted a vehicle registration check and learned that the marker plates on a Chevrolet van driven on Mt Pleasant Road by Francisco Sanchez, 42, of Danbury did not belong on that vehicle.

Police charged Sanchez with misuse of plates. Sanchez is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court July 31 to answer the charge.

Marijuana Charge

Police said they observed a vehicle with a taillight out traveling northbound on Queen Street about 11:43 pm on July 18. Police said they stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Queen Street and Church Hill Road and smelled marijuana smoke emanating from it.

Police said they investigated and charged motorist Donald K. Knight, 42, of Danbury with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and failure to have an operating taillight.

After processing, police released Knight on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 1 to answer the charges.
