Young Inventors Take Over Middle Gate School

As part of Newtown’s continuing education program, students stormed Middle Gate School recently for the popular weeklong Camp Invention, a science and creativity camp.

The camp was opened to all Newtown students from grades one through five, and students spent most of the day working their way through various sessions, with titles like “I Can Invent,” “Problem Solving from Planet Zak,” and “Amazing Games.”

Throughout each session, students – close to 110 students signed up for the camp – worked on experiments that illustrated the various lesson plans.

For students, much of the camp was geared toward making an original invention. Students were asked to bring recyclable materials from home, along with a “take apart” item – a radio or a computer, for example – that they could combine with the recyclable material. Students dismantled everyday items, and then re-built part of them with their recyclables.

The camp session culminated in a presentation to parents at the end of the week. Students had a chance to show off their inventions, a good way to mark the end of a fun week.
