Preserving Reservoir Road Is About More Than Protecting Our Past

To the Editor:

I’m writing to raise awareness about a matter of great importance to our community: the proposed discontinuance of Reservoir Road. This road is not just a path; it’s a vital part of our town’s history, a segment of the Rochambeau Trail from the Revolutionary War era, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

What concerns me deeply is that many townspeople likely haven’t heard about this vote for a discontinuance. It seems to be moving forward hastily at the request of a developer, without adequate opportunity for our community to weigh in. This decision is slated for the upcoming Board of Selectmen (BOS) meeting, July 15.

Preserving Reservoir Road is about more than just protecting our past — it’s about maintaining a beautiful and natural space for everyone to enjoy. This area is not only rich in historical significance but also serves as a habitat for local wildlife. Losing it to development would mean losing a piece of our natural heritage and a sanctuary for wildlife in our town.

All statutes, rules and regulations must be rigorously followed before any decision is made. Proper procedures must be adhered to, ensuring transparency and accountability in this process. Our community deserves the assurance that every step has been taken to consider the long-term implications of such a decision.

Our BOS leaders, only three, hold the future of Reservoir Road in their hands. I urge them to consider the broader impact of this decision and to stand with our community in preserving this important historical and natural asset. They were elected to safeguard what makes Newtown special, what drew many of us here in the first place, and not to sacrifice it for a developer.

I encourage all residents to speak out and support the preservation of this road. Let’s work together to ensure that Newtown’s history and natural beauty are preserved for generations to come. Let’s make sure this road remains a symbol of our pride in Newtown’s past and our commitment to its future.

Sincerely,

Terry Hennessey
