Triad Program Ceremony Slated For Next Week

A law enforcement program designed to enhance the safety and security of local senior citizens is scheduled to start operation Monday, July 14, following ceremonies at the Newtown Senior Center.

The session marking the beginning of the Triad program is slated for 11 am to 1 pm at the center at 14 Riverside Road, Sandy Hook.

Triad is a cooperative effort among law enforcement, social service agencies, and senior citizen groups, according to police Patrol Officer Maryhelen McCarthy.

The Triad program aims for the reduced criminal victimization of older residents. The project assesses the needs and concerns of older residents. The program is designed to generate public dialogue on safety and security issues.

At the session, a document, known as the Triad Cooperative Agreement of Newtown, will be signed symbolizing the start of the program. Those expected to sign the document are First Selectman Herbert Rosenthal, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, US Rep Nancy Johnson, Police Chief Michael Kehoe, People’s Bank official Angela DeLeon, and members of an advisory council.

A Triad group is comprised of police, senior citizens, and social service agencies. The partnership’s main purpose is to provide crime prevention services for older residents. The group also provides post-victimization services, if necessary.
