A Clinic With A Worthy Mission

To the Editor:

Do you or your neighbors and friends have medical coverage?

As a physician, I have met many families who have limited or no health care coverage at all right here in Newtown. While we think of Newtown as an affluent community, one out of every nine residents does not have medical insurance.

To address this very real and growing problem, “Kevin’s Community Center” was founded in loving memory of my son, Kevin Taweh, who recently passed away. The mission of this nonprofit organization is to provide free primary care services to Newtown adult residents who have no coverage and meet the established income guidelines.

A partnership has been established with Danbury Hospital that allows us to provide free laboratory and some radiology services. While most medications will be provided at no cost through the clinic, the Newtown Drug Center has agreed to fill prescriptions not available at the clinic at cost. Kevin’s Community Center has put together a referral network of specialists who have agreed to see our patients in their offices at no cost.

The clinic is located at Fairfield Hills in Newtown, and will be open on Wednesdays from 1 to 5 pm beginning this August. Even though the clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, and other administrative staff, it will cost us approximately $50,000 annually to cover equipment, medical supplies, and liability insurance.

There are many ways Newtown residents like you can help. One way would be to send a financial donation to support the clinic; 99 percent of your contributions will go for direct patient care. Donations can be sent to Kevin’s Community Center, PO Box 0037, Newtown, CT 06470. You can also volunteer your time at our clinic in a position that matches your interests and skills.

My hope is that Kevin’s memory will live on in the health we give to others.

Sincerely yours,

Z. Michael Tawey, MD
