Projects Are Judged
By Eliza Hallabeck
The day after classes ended for students at Newtown High School, Advance Placement Math and Science students who completed a project for the first AP Project Contest at the school showed up on Friday, June 19, to display their project before judges.
âWeâre hoping it will happen every year,â said NHS teacher Nicole Leone, âand would like it to include all AP classes.â
Students in AP Math and Sciences courses had the option to choose a topic of interest to them and create a project to be presented before judges. Judging the projects were Peter Baumgartner with ASML, Becky Hall, a former NHS teacher and current professor at WestConn, and Karen Giavannone with Prudential. The judges looked at the projects for creativity, level of difficulty, professionalism, and clarity.
Prizes for the creators of the winning projects included $120 worth of gift certificates for Tambascioâs, The Blue Colony Diner, and Ferris Acres Creamery.
Students were allowed to create their projects separately or with a partner.
The Overall winning project was created by Natalie Villa and Tony Fragoso. The Science Runner-Up was created by Paul Garafolo and Bryony Langdon, and the Math Runner-Up was submitted by Judith Carnali and Gretchen Hoffmann.
