WATERBURY â The Mattatuck Museum Arts & History Center has declared the second Sunday of the month Museum Sundays, with free admission, and guided art and history tours.
Museum Sunday starts on July 12 and will continue on August 9 and September 13, making the second Sunday of the month the perfect day for a museum visit. For those who like to ask questions and hear fascinating stories, take a tour of the art galleries 1 pm and the history gallery at 2 pm. Â Or pick up an exhibit scavenger hunt at the reception desk for a fun family activity and new look at the displays.
The Mattatuck Museum features a dynamic, regional history exhibit designed to engage audiences of all ages with interactive displays, oral histories, historic movie clips, and a Conversations Table, one of only four in the United States. Â Art galleries house a permanent collection of work by Connecticut artists from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries, including American giants John Trumbull, Erastus Salisbury Field, Frederic Church, John Frederick Kensett, Arshile Gorky, Kay Sage, Yves Tanguy, Peter Poskas, Abe Ajay, and Alexander Calder.
There is also a display of over 10,000 buttons. Â In addition, on view during summer Museum Sundays are a dramatic exhibition of paintings by Danielle Mailer and sculptures, moving in currents of air, by Tim Prentice, and an exhibition of old medical equipment, video clips and photographs from Saint Maryâs Hospital.
