DUI Arrest
DUI Arrest
Police report that they received a complaint concerning a motorist who was driving erratically northward on Main Street, near its intersection with Glover Avenue, about 6:30 pm June 30, so they responded to the area seeking the driver in question.
Police said they stopped motorist Matthew Shapiro, 25, of Bridgeport to investigate, after which they charged him with four offenses â driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, failure to drive to the right on a curve, and failure to carry a driverâs license.
Following processing, police released Shapiro from custody on $100 bail for a July 14 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.
Dodge Damaged
At about 4 pm June 30, an unknown motorist in the rear parking lot at Booth Library at 25 Main Street, struck a parked vacant 1998 Dodge Durango SUV, damaging its driverâs door, police said.
The offending motorist then drove away without reporting the collision, police said.
Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with information about it to contact them at 426-5841.
Five Charges
At about 11:15 am on June 30, police stopped motorist Justin Fried, 34, of New York City on Wasserman Way, near its intersection with Nunnawauk Road, because the vehicle that Fried was driving had no front marker plate.
After investigating, police charged Fried with failure to have a front marker plate, driving with a suspended license, and failure to carry a vehicle registration.
Also, police learned that a warrant was pending on Fried in connection with a past incident in Brookfield for which Fried had not appeared in court.
Thus, police additionally charged Fried with failure to respond to a violation and with simple trespassing. After processing, police released Fried on $242 bail for a July 14 court appearance.
Main Street
About 7:30 pm June 29, motorist Melissa King, 18, of 128 Castle Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Honda Accord sedan westward on Hanover Road, stopped at a stop sign at that roadâs intersection with Main Street, police said.
At that time, motorist Natalie Clarke, 19, of 7 Whippoorwill Hill Road was driving a 2007 Buick Lacrosse sedan northward on Main Street, police added.
The Honda then pulled out from the stop sign and attempted to turn left onto southbound Main Street, but collided with the Buick, police said.
King explained that her view of traffic was obstructed by a pickup truck that was parked on Main Street, according to police.
There were no injuries. Police said they gave King a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.
SUV Vs Sedan
A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Edmond Road and Schoolhouse Hill Road about 6 pm June 29.
Police said motorist Sherril Paisley, 74, of 38 Walnut Tree Hill Road was driving a 2004 Honda Pilot SUV eastward, as motorist Robert Harris, 40, of Kingston, N.Y., was driving a 2007 Honda Civic sedan northward on Edmond Road.
The Civic then stopped at a stop sign on Edmond Road, but the front section of the auto partially extended into the intersection, police said.
The Pilotâs driver told police she did not think that the Civic would stop, so she attempted to avoid a collision by steering to the right, but in doing so, she collided with the Civic, police said.
There were no injuries. Police said they issued written warnings to both drivers.
Scooter
On July 3, a Razor-brand scooter was found on the property at 23 Charter Ridge Drive in Sandy Hook. Police are seeking the vehicleâs owner who may contact Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 426-5841, to claim the item.
Eichlerâs Cove
Police said they charged a local man with three offenses following an incident at the town-owned Eichlerâs Cove Park on Lake Zoar on the evening of July 5.
Police allege that John Benvenutti, 45, of 69 Bennetts Bridge Road stole a personâs US flag and also broke a portable radio that belonged to the flagâs owner. Police also allege that Benvenutti shouted obscenities while other people were at the park.
Police arrested Benvenutti on charges of sixth-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief, and breach of peace. After processing his case, police released Benvenutti on a written promise to appear in court on July 21.
Infant Formula
At about 2:30 pm on June 30, a man was spotted placing four cans of powdered infant formula into a shopping bag inside the Super Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street (Route 25), after which the man left the store without paying for the goods, constituting the crime of sixth-degree larceny, police said.
Police described the thief as a white man with short brown hair who is in his early 20s. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Officer John McCluskey at 426-5841.
Saturn Off Road
About 7:21 am July 1, motorist Alexander Neufeld, 16, of 12 Joan Drive was driving a 2002 Saturn sedan southward near 25 Brushy Hill Road in dark, wet, foggy conditions, when the auto went off the roadâs left shoulder and struck a rock, police report.
Neither Neufeld, nor an adult passenger, were injured. Police verbally warned Neufeld for failure to drive to the right.
Rollover Crash
About 4 am on July 3, motorist Seunghwan Oh, 26, of Danbury was driving a 1993 Saab 900 coupe westward on Route 34, near its intersection with Sherman Street, when while negotiating a curve in the road, the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and went off the eastbound road shoulder, after which it recrossed both lanes and went off the westbound road shoulder, struck and then climbed an embankment, after which the Saab rolled over onto its roof, police said.
Oh was not injured. Sandy Hook firefighters and volunteer ambulance staffers went to the scene.
Police said they issued Oh an infraction for a lane violation.
Hazardous Intersection
Police report a two-vehicle collision at the hazardous intersection of South Main Street, Mile Hill Road, and Country Club Road about 10 am July 3.
In that incident, a 2006 Honda Civic sedan driven by Heather Aldo, 37, of Southbury, collided with a 1993 Toyota Camry driven by Luciana Viana Araujo, 37, of Danbury, police said.
There were no injuries. Aldo received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, police said. Araujo received an infraction for driving without a license, according to police.
Sideswiped
About 6:40 pm June 29, motorist Timothy Anderson, 17, of Bristol was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Passat in the right lane of eastbound Interstate 84, near the Rochambeau Bridge, when an unknown orange-and-black tractor-trailer truck drifted into the right lane and sideswiped the Volkswagen, state police said. The truck left the scene. The incident is under investigation.
Rollover Accident
State police said motorist Erich Plankey, 19, of Oxford was driving a 1998 Subaru Forester on westbound Interstate 84âs Exit 11 on-ramp at about 1:18 am July 3, when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve on the wet pavement and the vehicle began sliding.
The Subaru went onto the roadâs left shoulder and then rolled over, coming to rest on its side, state police said. Sandy Hook firefighters went to the scene. Ambulance volunteers transported Plankey to Danbury Hospital for treatment. Enforcement information was not available.
Car Hits Barrier
Motorist Jose Gregori, 48, of New City, Rockland County, N.Y., was driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe in the right lane of three lanes on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, about 11:30 pm July 4, when the vehicle drifted onto the right road shoulder and struck a concrete barrier rail, state police said.
Gregori was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.
Bad Check
After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Mary Ann Kiss, 49, of 78 Sugar Lane went to the police station about 3:45 pm July 6 and was charged with issuing a bad check, police said.
Police said the charge stems from a June 22 complaint.
After processing, police released Kiss on a written promise to appear in court on July 27.
Collision
Motorist George Kent Guarino, 63, of Danbury, who was driving a commercial 2001 Ford E-350 van about 10:38 am June 29, was backing out of a driveway on Main Street, when the Ford collided with a parked 1994 Honda Accord sedan, police said.
There were no injuries. Police said they issued an infraction to Guarino for driving an unregistered vehicle.
Chevrolet Vs Deer
About 10:08 pm on July 1, motorist Timothy Gibbons, 38, of 15 Spring Trail was driving a commercial 2008 Chevrolet HHR westward near 62 Jeremiah Road, when the vehicle collided with a deer, police said.
Gibbons was not injured. Police said they issued Gibbons a written warning due to a failure to carry proof of automotive insurance.
Van Vs Rock
Motorist Carl Devino, 33, of Prospect was driving a 2001 Ford Econoline van westward near 1 Great Quarter Road about 4:30 pm July 7, when he struck a rock along the roadâs right shoulder, lost control of the van and then swerved to the right, with the vehicle coming to rest off the road, police said.
Devino was not injured. Police said they verbally warned him for making a restricted turn.
Intersection Crash
Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Berkshire Road about 5 pm July 3.
Police said motorist Stacey Maddox, 37, of East Setauket, N.Y., who was driving a 2004 Cadillac Escalade SUV carrying four child passengers, stopped at a red traffic signal on Wasserman Way.
When the signal turned green, the Cadillac proceeded to make a right turn onto Berkshire Road, but then stopped after Maddox saw a motorist driving through a red traffic signal on Berkshire Road, police said.
An unknown motorist, who also was turning right from Wasserman Way onto Berkshire Road, then struck the Cadillac from behind, but left the scene of the accident without providing any information to Maddox, police said. There were no injuries.
The offending motorist was reported to be driving a silver BMW, possibly a 3-series auto, which would have heavy front-end damage from the impact with the Cadillac, police said.
Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact investigating Officer Matthew Hayes at the police station at 426-5841.
Mt Pleasant Collision
About 6:40 pm on July 7, motorist Peter Closius, 18, of Bethel, who was driving a 2000 Honda Civic coupe westward near 147 Mt Pleasant Road, stopped abruptly for a vehicle which had stopped in front of him, police said.
Westbound motorist Melissa Matthews, 37, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla sedan, then struck the rear end of the Honda, police said. There were no injuries.
Police said they verbally warned Matthews for following too closely. Police issued Closius an infraction for driving an unregistered vehicle.
Found Items
Police have added two items to their inventory of found goods.
On July 5, a Sony-brand Cyber Shot camera was found with some family photos at Dickinson Park on Elm Drive.
On July 3, pairs of prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses were found near the police station at 3 Main Street.
The owners may claim the items by contacting Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at 426-5841.
Motor Vehicle Accident
About 9:15 am on July 8, motorist Toni Nowotny, 22, of Monroe was driving a 2005 Dodge Stratus sedan westward on Berkshire Road, at its intersection with Wasserman Way, and then stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Dodge was hit from behind by westbound motorist Theodore Gissen, 20, of 35 Horseshoe Ridge Road, who was driving a 2000 Audi A-6 sedan, police report.
There were no injuries. Police said they issued Gissen a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
