Historic Homes Explored
In Hattertown
By Shannon Hicks
Whether interested in learning about a chapter of Newtownâs history or just the enjoyment of seeing the decorating schemes of the homes of others, people turned out by the dozen on Saturday to visit the seven homes included on Newtown Historical Societyâs Eighth Annual Historic House Tour.
The historical society had decided to focus on the Historic Hattertown District for this yearâs event, which is about the largest fundraiser the society holds annually. Ticket sales go into the groupâs budget and are earmarked primarily for upkeep of its headquarters, the circa 1750 Matthew Curtiss House.
âWe made nearly $3,700, which is the second highest weâve ever done,â Sallie Meffert confirmed this week. Mrs Meffert, a former historical society president, plays a large role in coordinating each yearâs tour.
âWeâre really thankful that everyone supports, through their ticket purchases, the Curtiss House,â Mrs Meffert continued. âWe had great weather, and I think the homeowners and participants all had a good time.â
