Three Newtown Middle School students were honored by the Newtown Rotary with the middle school Personal Achievement Award for the studentsâ contributions to community service in Newtown. Tony Salvatore, assistant principal, introduced the students and Rotary president Scott Senete gave out certificates of appreciation.
Sixth grader Ashley Thompson is respected and is a kind student to both adults and peers. She works hard, does well in all subjects, and helps in the classroom. Her teacher states, âIt is a pleasure to teach Ashley and to know her.â Ashley volunteers outside of school helping to baby sit her younger sister, help her with her homework, and baby sits her cousins during the summer. For a neighborhood lady with multiple sclerosis she waters the plants and feeds her horses. For her grandmother she goes shopping and cooks; and this past month she started taking tennis lessons.
Seventh grader Kimberley Solheim was selected because of her many community involvements including volunteering at Ashlar, and an active fundraiser for the Coins for the Cure Leukemia Drive. She is a member of the junior youth group at St Rose, a member of the middle school drama club, and is a student ambassador. Kim also excels in all academic areas and has won the Little Scholar Award for cheerleading. In her spare time Kim plays basketball, lacrosse, and is a cheerleader.
Eighth grader Chris Yitts was selected by his cluster for his kindness, generosity, and the respect he offers to all his peers and teachers at all times. âEveryone loves to be around Chris.â He loves basketball and volunteers at St Rose and plans to attend Abbott Tech next year. He has already begun his own landscaping business.
