Newtown Nurse To Coordinate Wellness On Wheels Program

DANBURY — Newtown resident Elaine Abrams, a registered nurse, has been named Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Coordinator.

Ms Abrams earned her diploma in nursing at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing and her bachelor of science in Community Health Education at Western Connecticut State University. She is a master of public health candidate at the University of Connecticut in Farmington.

In this position, Ms Abrams, a certified community health education specialist, will coordinate and direct all operational issues concerning the WOW mobile outreach medical service. Her work will support all administrative matters under the direction of Newtown resident Jack S.C. Fong, MD, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Danbury Hospital and director of the WOW program. In addition, Ms Abrams will be active clinically to provide screenings and diagnostics to families presenting for treatment, immunizations, patient education, assessment for referrals to area clinics, and other community services.

The Wellness on Wheels van is a mobile health unit that travels to underserved areas in Danbury to provide primary care and immunizations for a nominal fee or for free to those who cannot afford to pay. The WOW van is sponsored by Danbury Hospital, Danbury Visiting Nurse Association, the City of Danbury, and the State of Connecticut.
