Admirals American Legion Baseball Team Wins Nine Straight, Moves Into Second Place
The Post 100 Bethel Admirals U19 American Legion baseball team, which includes players from Newtown, won nine straight summer league games from June 30 through July 5, before finally losing 2-1 to first-place Waterbury, on July 8. The team improved to 16-4 and moved into second place in the Zone 5 standings.
Game results and highlights from the winning streak are as follows:
Admirals 1, New Milford 0: The Admirals visited Volunteer Field to begin a stretch of nine games over six days. Jim Parker (2-for-2) singled down the left field line in the second inning to drive in the game’s only run. Hurler Joe Liquori protected the lead, striking out 11 New Milford batters. In the bottom of the seventh, he induced an infield popup to strand the tying and winning runs at third and second.
Admirals 1, Danbury 0: The Post 100 Admirals again scored a lone second-inning run and made it stand up. This time it was lefty Mike Parker who made the most of minimal run support, going the distance at Danbury High School. He allowed only three hits.
Admirals 5, Danbury 0: Shortstop Jack Procaccini put on a defensive clinic and stroked a pair of doubles in support of right hander Stephen Brittin’s third complete game win of the summer. Logan Whelton-Pane (2-for-4) continued to swing a hot bat for Post 100.
Admirals 13, New Milford 5: Stephen Brittin (2-for-4, double) led an Admirals’ offensive explosion at Bethel High School. The Admirals capitalized on a some defensive miscues by New Milford early in the game.
Admirals 9, New Milford 6: After allowing New Milford to tie the game with four runs in the top of the sixth, the Admirals put it away in the bottom of the sixth on the strength of hits by Sam Czel (2-for-4, double), Logan Whelton-Pane (3-for-4), Joe Liquori (2-for-3), and Abe Defeo (1-for 1, double).
Admirals 6, Prospect 2: The Admirals traveled to Prospect’s Hotchkiss Park, where Sam Czel (2-for-4) and Jake Roper (2-for-3, double) sparked a five-run third inning rally.
Admirals 9, Oxford 1: In his first start of the season, right hander Abe Defeo allowed only four hits and a single walk in a holiday afternoon contest at Bethel High School. Flashing the leather for Post 100 were Stephen Brittin and Chas Cywin.
Admirals 9, Oakville 4: Jim Parker (2-for-2, double), Charlie Huegi (2-for-4, double), Jack Procaccini (2-for-3, double), and Joe Liquori (3-for-5) led the offense, and Liquori threw seven strong innings of four-hit pitching in a mid-day game at Pomperaug High School in Southbury.
Admirals 7, Prospect 0: Post 100 banged out 12 hits at Prospect in support of hurler Stephen Brittin’s complete game effort. Michael Parker and Dave Matthews each went 2-for-2, and Logan Whelton-Pane went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
The regular season winds down next week and the state tournament is scheduled to begin on July 18.
