To the Editor:

There has been some talk about the quality of representation we in Monroe and Newtown receive from our current state House member, DebraLee Hovey. We have seen negative comments made by her opponent’s supporters in newspaper articles, letters to editor questioning her record, and old-fashioned political rhetoric on websites and blogs. No matter what distortions of the truth are presented, remember to indeed look at the facts.

Fact: DebraLee Hovey has secured much needed funding for projects such as the new Wolfe Park Pool, the Webb Mountain open space purchase, accessibility elevators at Stepney Elementary School and most recently the future police department renovations.

Fact: DebraLee Hovey has been appointed to and serves on important legislative committees such as Appropriations and Judiciary, which have a great deal of influence on the budget and the State of Connecticut Judiciary system.

Fact: DebraLee Hovey has continued to fight for Newtown and Monroe’s fair share of education cost sharing money, which helps to offset the overall property tax rate.

Fact: DebraLee Hovey has been chosen by Governor M. Jodi Rell to represent the entire State of Connecticut on a national level when it comes to juvenile justice issues.

Fact: DebraLee Hovey makes it a priority to respond to constituent concerns and looks for solutions from the state government to help her district. Whether it’s a phone call to the Department of Labor or a proclamation for an Eagle Scout, she always avails herself to all of her constituents.

Fact: As a member of the minority party in the Legislature, DebraLee Hovey has always fought for common sense and the change that everyone wants to see in Hartford. We don’t need a brand new Legislature, but we do need to elect more Republicans who stand for issues like encouraging job growth and cutting government spending.

Fact: As a candidate in the 2010 race, DebraLee Hovey will not accept any taxpayer money to run her campaign. All funds will be privately raised by those who give of their hard-earned dollars willingly. These supporters are grateful for the work she has done for her district and wish to send her back to Hartford to continue the fight.

The fact is the residents of the 112th District have enjoyed outstanding leadership from someone we have elected to represent us in Hartford since 2002. She has continued to serve the entire district with hard work, dedication and a passion for public service. This is why we are all in full support of DebraLee Hovey as our state representative and are proud to be on her team.
