Summer Programs Begin At Head O’ Meadow

By Eliza Hallabeck

Safely tucked away from the nearly 100 degree heat on Tuesday, July 6, students attended the first day of summer school programs for Special Education, Jump Start, and Summer Music and Arts Program (SMART) at Head O’ Meadow School.

Continuing Education Director Elissa Gellis said the summer programs are off to a great start. From what she saw when at Head O’ Meadow twice on Tuesday, she said students on the Intro To Dance & Musical Theater, for grades three to six, were “dancing and singing away.”

Other courses offered in this year’s SMART program include Jewelry Design, Collage and 3-D Art, The Great Clay Adventure, Mosaics, Adventure Safari, Mask Making, Native American Art, Daphne’s Hat Shoppe, Young Authors and Illustrators, Science Wizards, Icky Sticky Ooey Gooey Chemistry, Yoga For Tweens, and Music Band Jam.

Some programs also offered through Continuing Education, like the Broadway Bound program, which is featured in a related story in this week’s edition, and the Accelerated Reader program at Reed Intermediate School, started last week.

The second session of Continuing Education courses is still open for students to sign up, and starts on July 19. Each session runs for two weeks.

Special Education programs, like the life skills course held in Head O’ Meadow’s music room, and the Jump Start programs also kick-started summer on Tuesday. According to Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson, the Jump Start program is run through grant money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
