Frank Lisi would not confirm or deny reports that the owners plan to expand the Fireside Inn bar into a lounge. But he did say that they had made a previous attempt to expand the bar and the town rejected the plan, saying there wasnât enough parking.

Rose and George Cascone celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in country style at a hoedown arranged by their children. Dubbed the âHawleyville Hoedownâ the party went on in spite of rain. Nearly 80 guests attended the party on the lovely grounds and the Rocking Roosters Square Dance Club danced whenever they could between the showers.

This yearâs Summer Festival Block Party will return to the Queen Street Shopping Center on August 4, from 1 pm until dusk. The afternoon hours will allow for some new events, such as a tug-of-war between the townâs real estate brokers, pet parade, jump rope contest, break dance contest, and many other events.

Five Boy Scouts will leave Newtown this Saturday for a 21-day trip to the 50th Anniversary of Scouting National Jamobree in Colorado Springs. The Scouts will travel by bus to Colorado.

The fifth annual carnival of the combined Newtown Fire Companies closed last Saturday evening after six nights of the largest attendance and interest ever shown in any annual carnival in town. Between 15,000 and 20,000 visited the carnival grounds at the Italian Community Center on Route 34 during the run of the carnival.
The Board of Education at its regular monthly meeting made definite plans to hold formal dedication services of the junior high school building on Sunday, September 11. The junior high school addition to the high school has been fully completed, has been accepted by the town, and certification received from the State Board of Education that the total sum of $544,372.40 will be paid to the town by the state over the next 20 years, the stateâs contribution to the building.

This Friday, July 15, Miss Sara Swanberg, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Swanberg of Taunton Lane, and Miss Cynthia White, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Edward White of Mt Pleasant, will sail for England on the French Line steamship âLiberteâ as members of a group of young people who will study the life of churches in England and Scotland.

The tennis courts and golf course of the Newtown Country Club were well-filled on the Fourth of July. The kickerâs handicap Tournament, played in the morning, found many players in the final draw. At noon a chicken pattie dinner, prepared by Mrs Charles Mercer, was served in the clubhouse.

Newtownâs Tercentenary committee through its chairman W.M. McKenzie, and Paul S. Smith, has been most fortunate in securing as speaker for the banquet, Chief Aviation Pilot Harold June of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. June is a most interesting speaker and has a wonderful story to tell, being the only man to have made every flight of exploration in the Antarctic in both Byrd expeditions.

The heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, which was accompanied by a severe electrical storm, caused considerable damage in various parts of town. The storm followed rather an irregular path, the southwestern section of the town receiving only a light sprinkle while other districts were almost flooded with the heavy rain. The cupola of the barn of Mrs Frances Mahoney of Main street was struck by lightning. At the residence of H.N. Tiemann, Sr, lightning entered the house on the antenna setting fire to a small lamp. Firemen were called to the summer residence of George Smith in Hanover district where a garage was on fire and burned to the ground.

Judging from the looks of the blackberry bushes at Frank Ives,â neatly trimmed, tied to stakes, and loaded with fruit, one could but think that it would be necessary to send them by the car load to market.

W.W. Wakeley is now doing business in his model garage in Newtown. His building is 35 x 60, with cement floor, giving 1,050 square feet of space. An office room is being done off in the southeast corner of the building. A 250 gallon gasoline tank is now installed. Mr Wakeley will handle the best oils on the market and automobilists generally will find this a good place to get their supplies.

Henry Rupf has done an excellent thing for the public in providing strong chains with snaps, which he has attached to the posts in front of his store.

The Sandy Hook hotel and Corbett, Crowe & Co have oiled the roadway in front of their places of business. G.F. Taylor has bought 15 barrels, so that the roads throughout Sandy Hook village are to be thoroughly oiled.
