 Nursing School Plans Reunion

WATERBURY — Though its doors have been closed for 30 years, the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing alumni will celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary with a two-day reunion event in August featuring an afternoon tea, a dinner, and the dedication of a special painting.

While members of the Alumni Association have received invitations to attend, the organization invites all graduates to take part in this centennial event. Those who are not members of the association, or those alumni who may not have received their invitations, are asked to call Rosemarie Murphy, RN, at 203-266-5901 or Mary Jakubauskas, RN, at 203-264-8890.

To kickoff the celebration, the alumni will host an afternoon tea August 14 in the hospital cafeteria from 2 to 4 pm. The event will include tours of the hospital and culminate in the presentation of a special painting for display in the main lobby at 3:45 pm. These events are free.

A dinner at the Aqua Turf in Southington will take place August 15 with cocktails at 2 and dinner at 3. Tickets are $55 and can be purchased by contacting Ms Murphy or Ms Jakubauskas.

Founded in 1904 as the Waterbury Hospital Training School, the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing was renamed in 1941. Nearly 1,800 graduates from 33 states and seven foreign countries were trained through the school, which offered a three-year degree program through 1973. The school’s Alumni Association holds quarterly meetings and manages the Florence Nightingale Cot Fund, to assist graduates anywhere in the country with their hospital expenses, and the Philomena Marcoux Scholarship.
