Sure it was a draw, but there could have been no better way to end it.

Sponsored by Futbol Friends International, the Newtown Storm (U14) met with a team from Brantford, Ontario, Canada in an international friendly soccer match, which served as a tribute to the late Al Taubert.

The pre-game ceremony featured both teams lining up across the field and carrying their nation’s flags, the national anthems of both countries being played, and gifts being exchanged. Then it was on to the game.

The Storm took the early lead, but the Tigers of Brantford soon tied it up, 1-1. After the Storm took a 3-1, their northern friends battled back to tie the game. Both teams had late opportunities to score, but could not convert.

Jon Hartlett, Max Barrett and Luke McGill scored for Newtown. Justin Carotti, Alex de Brantes, Casey Gilbert, Chris Hoagland, Eric MacKnight, Noah Kugielsky, Jeff Lipnick, Alex Naldini and Matt Norris all suited up for Newtown.

After the game, the two teams went swimming in the Treadwell Park pool and then shared some pizza.

The game was made possible due to the hard work of Ann Kugielsky.
