Nathan S. Hoyt

Nathan “Nate” S. Hoyt, 88, of Danbury, husband of Sharon (Smith) Hoyt, died July 5 at his residence. He was born November 17, 1926, in Portland, Maine, and was a son of the late Phyllis (Hamilton) and Raymond Hoyt.

In addition to his wife of 30 years, his stepchildren Elizabeth Morrissey of Newtown, Raymond Ward of Wethersfield, Edward Smith Ward of Danbury, and Kathleen Washburn of Watertown; sons Michael Hoyt, and his wife Linda, of Redding and Mark Hoyt; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Hamilton of Danbury; a sister, Sharon Delaney of Bethel; and several nieces and nephews survive Mr Hoyt. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Charles Hoyt; and his first wife, Alice (Giambartolomei) Hoyt.

He attended Danbury schools, Danbury High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1944, serving in the Pacific Theater with the 6th Marine Division. The division was the first wave of Marines to invade Okinawa on April 1, 1945. The Okinawa Campaign was the largest battle in the Pacific during World War II. Mr Hoyt was wounded on Mount Yae-Take during heavy fighting the same day that President Franklin Roosevelt died. He spent five weeks in a field hospital and returned to fighting on Okinawa and was wounded the second time. He was with the 6th Marine Division on August 26, 1945, when it went into Tokyo just prior to the unconditional surrender of the Japanese government. He spent the next nine months with the American Forces occupying Japan.

He returned home and worked in the hatting industry for Mallory Hat for 19 years, and then joined John Deep as manager of Deep's Market until his retirement in 1995. He is a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League Hat City Detachment.

The Liturgy of the Word and Final Commendation will take place Friday, July 10, at 10:30 am, in St Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Road, Danbury. Interment will follow in St Peter Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury, Thursday, July 9, from 4 to 7 pm.
