Louisiana Woman Arrested On Multiple Sex Charges

By Andrew Gorosko

Newtown police arrested a Louisiana woman on a warrant at Danbury Superior Court on July 1, charging her with three counts of second-degree sexual assault and four counts of risk of injury to a child.

The charges stem from the woman’s alleged past consensual sexual involvement with the approximately 14-year-old younger brother of her former fiancé.

Brittany Lockwood, 23, of Bossier City, La., did not enter pleas to the seven charges. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 15.

Judge Michael Maronich appointed a public defender to represent Lockwood in the criminal case.

At her arraignment, the judge raised Lockwood’s bail from $5,000 to $15,000. Lockwood was being held on July 6 at York Correctional Institution in Niantic.

Two female Newtown police officers traveled to Louisiana to bring Lockwood to Connecticut to face the criminal charges. Lockwood waived extradition.

Court officials stated that Lockwood has no criminal record in Connecticut, but has been arrested elsewhere in the past on various charges. Lockwood faces both medical and mental health issues, according to court officials.

The prosecutor told Judge Maronich that Lockwood allegedly had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old brother of her then-fiancé in the home where Lockwood was living with her fiancé last year.

After being confronted about the situation by the 14-year-old boy’s mother, Lockwood went to Louisiana, according to the prosecutor.

Lockwood’s public defender told Judge Maronich that Lockwood is a Louisiana native, adding that she waived extradition, thus allowing Newtown police to bring her to Connecticut to face the charges.

Judge Maronich placed a protective order against Lockwood, ordering her to have no contact with the unspecified protectee listed in the undisclosed document. Lockwood agreed that she would have no contact with that person.

The Newtown police investigation into the case started on January 6 when they received a call from a Taunton Hill Road woman identified in the court paperwork as “Mother Doe.”

The court papers refer to the victim as “John Doe.” The victim’s brother is named “Brother Doe” in the documents.

According to the court papers, Mother Doe told police that in July 2010, she grew suspicious of the relationship between John Doe and Lockwood, who as Brother Doe’s fiancé had been living at the residence since April 2010.

The mother learned through communications with a friend of Lockwood’s that Lockwood had been having sexual relations with 14-year-old, according to the court papers.

In early January 2010, the youth tearfully admitted to his mother that he and Lockwood had had sex several times in his brother and Lockwood’s bedroom, according to the court documents.

On January 4, Lockwood traveled to Louisiana by airplane.

Investigating police Officer Gladys Pisani states in the court papers that on January 19, she called Lockwood’s cellphone number and confirmed that she was speaking to Lockwood. Officer Pisani started explaining the reason for the call and Lockwood then disconnected the call, according to the documents.

Also, on January 20, Officer Pisani left a message on Lockwood’s cellphone in seeking to get a statement from Lockwood for the police investigation into the mother’s complaint, but Lockwood did not return the call, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

A conviction on a charge of second-degree sexual assault carries a mandatory nine-month jail sentence.
