Chess Club Announces Winners

The Newtown Chess Club announced the following winners from its five-month team tournament: the winning team, finishing with a 4-1 score, consisted of Alex Huang and Greg Steiner of Newtown, Chris Jensen of Shelton, and Hector Reyes and Danny Reyes of New Milford.  Members of the second place team with a 3-2 record, are Glenn Budzinski, Brandon Huang , Brendan Gregory, and Tristan Villamil of Newtown and Gabe Reyes of New Milford.  A trophy was presented to each member of the winning teams.

Each of the following best board scores for all teams also received a trophy: 1st Board: Glenn Budzinski, 4-0; 2nd Board, Chris Jensen, 5-0; 3rd Board, Joseph Han of Southbury, 3½ -½; 4th Board, Hector Reyes, 5-0; 5th Board, Grace Hamilton  of  Newtown, 4-1.

Six, evenly-matched, five-player teams participated in the tournament. Each team played one match against all other teams. Matches occurred monthly from February through June. The tournament was sanctioned by the US Chess Federation, and organized by Glenn Budzinski for the Newtown Chess Club.

The chess club meets Saturday afternoons, from 1 to 4:30 pm, at the C.H. Booth Library. All are welcome, regardless of age or skill. There are no dues, and chess sets, boards, and clocks are provided free of charge.
