Bridgeport Seeks To Cede Control Of Schools

BRIDGEPORT (AP) — Bridgeport’s school board has voted to ask the state to intervene in the city’s public school system. Tuesday’s 6-to-3 vote would allow the state to replace the board and make budget decisions.

Board President Barbara Bellinger told the Connecticut Post that she said she is convinced the state can help raise test scores, and resolve a budget gap of nearly $20 million.

Allan Taylor, chairman of the state Board of Education, said Tuesday the state cannot provide the district with additional funds.

The city becomes the first in the state to request intervention.
