Attorney Buzzi Wins Cal Ripken Title
Newtownâs Navy Blue baseball team, sponsored by Attorney Andrew Buzzi, captured the 11 year old Cal Ripken title on June 20.
In the first game of the morning-night double header the Buzzi team defeated Begany Design 9-0 to advance to the championship game. Tim Cervera, Ethan Aug, Kai Toomey, and Marc Lasorsa combined to complete the three-hit shutout. The fourth-seeded Buzzi team scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Henry Primavera was 2-for-3 with two doubles. He was also outstanding in the field. Tim Cervera went 3-for-4 with a double of his own. The big hit came in the fourth inning when Eugene Citrano cleared the bases with a three-run double making the score 7-0. Max McCleary walked three times in the game.
In the nightcap, Attorney Buzzi prevailed with a 12-11 win over Ingersoll Auto. The slugfest got going early when Buzzi scored five runs, led by a two-run single by Kai Toomey, followed by an RBI double by Cervera and an RBI double by Ethan Aug.
The championship team exploded for five more runs in the third as Primavera, Toomey, Aug, and Marc Lasorsa got base hits, staking Buzzi to a 10-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Matt Fuchs and his brother Ian knocked in the go-ahead runs and Aug closed out the game, but not before Citrano got a big strikeout the previous inning. Kent Mullen got five big outs in the fourth and fifth innings before handing the ball over to Citrano. Joe Palanzo hit two home runs in the game, pacing a big comeback. He hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to bring his team to within a run. It wasnât quite enough however as Aug got the final batter to ground out to Lasorsa at second to end the game.
