Tenth Annual Boston Harbor Islands Swim For Cancer Research July 22
BOSTON â Swim Across America is looking for swimming enthusiasts to dive into Boston Harbor on Friday, July 22, to benefit cancer research. Or, they may take part in either a one-mile competition or a half mile recreational swim at Nantasket Beach the following day, Saturday, July 23.
The events are open to both individual and team participation and feature the most decorated female Olympian in American history, Jenny Thompson. Olympians Janel Jorgensen, Mark Henderson, Eric Wunderlich, Carlton Bruner, Craig Beardsley, and Tim McKee will also be swimming.
Fridayâs Swim Across America Boston Harbor Islands Swim, a 22-mile relay, gets under way at Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston at 7 am. A minimum fundraising pledge of $1,500 is required to participate and swimmers must be at least 18 years old. After initially diving into the harbor with Olympic swim legends, each participant will swim approximately three to five 15-minute sessions throughout the day. Participants should be able to complete a one-mile swim within 30 minutes.
All Boston Harbor swimmers will be assigned to a transport boat for the day and swim with a group of other swimmers of similar ability. Lunch, beverages, snacks, and massages will be provided throughout the day.
The one-mile competitive ocean swim on Saturday, July 23, will be held at Nantasket Beach in Hull, Mass., and starts at 9 am with the half-mile swimmers heading into the water at 9:15 am. The minimum fundraising amount is $100 for these events and swimmers must be at least 21 years old.
Swimmers age 21 and over are invited to attend a kickoff party at Parris in Faneuil Hall, Thursday, July 21. Swimmers will be treated to dinner and after can enjoy music and a live auction.
All events benefit Swim across America (SAA), a nonprofit organization that supports cancer research. Proceeds will go to the David B. Perini, Jr Quality of Life Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The clinic is a multidisciplinary program that provides medical, educational, and psychosocial services to help survivors of cancer cope with the long-term effects of their treatment. The event has raised more than $1 million since it began in 1996 and this yearâs goal is to raise $250,000.
