Library’s Concert Series

The 2005 free concert series presented by C.H. Booth Library will continue on Saturday, July 16, with another concert at The Pleasance.

Northernbound will perform bluegrass music at the park located at 1 Main Street. Concerts begin at 7 pm and are open to all ages.

Attendees should bring their own blankets or chairs for seating. Picnics are welcome, and attendees are asked to carry out their own trash.

In the event of rain, concerts are moved into the lower meeting room of the library, at 25 Main Street. Call the library for additional information or if the weather is questionable, at 426-4533.

Northernbound is a four-piece bluegrass group consisting of Steve Paden on mandolin, Harry Paden on five-string banjo, Ray Paden on upright bass, and Mike Larocque on rhythm guitar.

The band has been together since 1993, so the members can easily create close-knit three- and four-part harmonies which they use to project traditional, gospel and original songs as well as foot-stompin’ instrumental numbers.

The Padens hail from Winsted and Mr Laroque is from Bristol.

The concert series will conclude in August with a return by the popular group The Bearcats. One of the Northeast’s favorite jazz and swing bands, The Bearcats was formed in 1977 by Joe Hanlon of Sandy Hook for the purpose of preserving and promulgating one of America’s national treasures – traditional jazz – and to enjoy doing it.

The Bearcats will be performing in Newtown on Friday, August 5. The location is tentatively set as Dickinson Park’s pavilion, on Elm Drive.
