Chase Collegiate Becomes Official
WATERBURYâ Chase Collegiate became the official name of St Margaretâs-McTernan School on Friday, July 1, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on South Porch, off the Main Building. State Senator Joan Hartley and Mayor Michael Jarjura offered comments at the occasion, and Eliza Chase Kimball, great-granddaughter of Frederick Chase, the founder of the McTernan School in 1912, also attended the event.
The new name recalls the Chase family that founded the original St Margarets School and McTernan School. With a 140-year history, the Chase Collegiate Schoolâs former name, while cherished by so many in the community, left unclear its identity as a unified, nonreligious, independent day school. St Margaretâs-McTernan has been on its present 40-acre campus on Chase Parkway since 1972.
