It took an extra effort in extra innings, but Taunton Press managed to capture the Babe Ruth Softball U12 American League championship with a thrilling 16-15 win over Executive Lawn.
Taunton trailed Executive for four innings, but rallied to tie the game at 14-14 in the bottom of the fifth, Each team added a run in the sixth inning and Executive appeared to have taken a 16-15 lead in the top of the seventh on a leadoff homer, but the homer was disallowed due to a batting order violation.
And, so, in the bottom of the frame Cate Waterhouse rapped a no-out base hit, bringing home the winning run.
Erin Ruddock led Taunton, pitching four inning and striking out six batters. Megan Brayton and Jessica Shepard provided relief pitching. Ruddock also belted a pair of homers, driving in five runs, while Jessica Shepard, Celeste Villafano and Lauren Jostes each doubled and combined for nine hits and five runs.
Nicole Haylon went 3-for-4 and played a solid defensive game.
Taunton Press finished 9-1 during the regular season, their only loss coming at the hands of Executive Lawn. But Taunton did finish in first based on points.
