Scholarship Association’s Annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble Features Hole In One
Newtown Scholarship Association (NSA) completed its 31st Annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble outing held at The Country Club of Waterbury on June 26. A luncheon was held for a full field of golfers before they headed out to complete 18 holes.
Waterbury’s course provides challenges, yet fun and laughter could be heard throughout the 18 holes of play. A bit more excitement was heard across the course as Jimmy Davies hit a hole-in-one on the 8th hole, 148 yards with a nine iron. As in the past, Ingersoll Auto of Danbury offered a car to any golfer shooting a hole in one at the 12th hole; unfortunately, Davies missed winning the car, but he did win closest to the pin on the 8th hole.
Winning the tournament was the team of Bill Flood, Tyler Tarantino, Nick Tarantino, and Bobby Pattison.
After completing 18 holes of golf, players gathered for drinks and dinner inside the clubhouse, where NSA honored First Selectman Dan Rosenthal. A silent auction and raffle table with many great prizes were offered — from golfing foursomes at prestigious courses to fun take-home items.
“Once again, we had tremendous support from the Newtown community for our golf outing,” stated co-chair Ted Kohler. “On behalf of NSA board of directors, I want to thank all the players, sponsors, and volunteers who make this event so successful and fun.”
Through annual fundraisers held during the year, NSA continues its mission to award scholarships and continuing aid to students with financial need heading to college. For the 2023-2024 school year, NSA has awarded 152 students from Newtown need-based scholarships totaling approximately $290 thousand. In the 85-year history of NSA, over $4 million scholarship awards have been distributed to college students. Visit the NSA website for more information.
