Nature Walks And Programs At Audubon Center
SOUTHBURY â The following events are being sponsored by Lillinonah Audubon Society and Bent of the River Audubon, and being presented at the Audubon Center in the South Britain section of Southbury during the upcoming weeks.
Bent of the River is at 185 East Flat Hill Road, off Route 172 in South Britain; turn onto the road that runs between South Britain General Store and South Britain Congregational Church.
There is no charge for events or programs and the public is invited.
Directorâs Nature Walks are being offered on Wednesdays, July 12 and August 2. Each program will begin at 8 am from the centerâs parking lot.
John Longstreth, director of the center, will lead a walk through the meadows looking for wildflowers such as black-eyed Susans, wild bergamot, and common milkweed, to name a few. These in turn will attract butterflies and other insects.
The birds are busy feeding their young, some of whom will be seen begging for a meal from mom and dad. The leisurely nature walks will each last a couple of hours.
Binoculars and cameras are suggested. Children are welcome.
A beginning Fern Identification walk will be held on Sunday, July 16, at 9:30 am. Carolyn Longstreth and Martha Cushman will meet those interested at the lower parking lot and help identify as many as 15 fern species. Ms Longstreth will distribute a handout and share a few tidbits on the identification of ferns.
Wear sturdy shoes, and bring bug spray and water. The program will be in the woods for about three hours.
Because the leaders would like to have enough materials prepared for their program, reservations are requested. Call Carolyn, 264-9502, or Martha, 798-0477, so that materials can be prepared.
Rain date is July 23.
On Thursday, August 24, a live bird demonstration. Refreshments and socializing will begin at 7:30, and the program will begin at 8. Live raptors â including hawks, eagles, and the like â will be discussed and a few will be shown.
Bring a flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot after the program. Children are most definitely welcome, as long as they have an accompanying adult.
