Charles F. Schempp, Jr, 74, of Southbury, died July 2 at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, he was a Trumbull resident most of his life before moving to Southbury.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Toi Loper of Newtown; daughter, Ginni Sprinsteen of Monroe; stepson, Scott S. Loper and his wife, Angie, of Torrington; brother, Jack Schempp of Providence, R.I., David Schempp of Summit, N.J.; stepdaughter, Heather Murphy of Greenwich; nieces and nephews, Robin and Matt Schempp, Gretchen O’Brien and Kate Lissy.

Mr Schempp was the son of the late Charles F. Schempp, Sr and Clara Lindholm Schempp, and the stepfather of the late Gregg Loper. He was a longtime printer at the New Haven Register and a member of the typographers union. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and served as corporal in the 101st Airborne Division He was a member of the American Legion Post 141 in Trumbull, was past 3rd district commander, past member of the Department of the American Legion Executive Committee, past chef de gare of American Legion, Voyager 63 40/8. Mr Schempp was chairman of the Honor Guard and marched in the local parades for 40 years, was a member of the 3rd District Homeland Security Committee, and co-founded the Concerned Citizens group in Trumbull.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 7, at 10 am, in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Interment with full military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Newtown. Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, July 6,  from 4 to 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton CT 06897-2523.
