Book Talk At The Meadows: Helene Hanff's Memoir
Book Talk At The Meadows: Helene Hanffâs Memoir
The next gathering of Book Talk at The Meadows will take place at 1:30 pm Wednesday, July 12, in the community room at Nunnawauk Meadows, 3 Nunnawauk Road.
This monthâs program will actually feature a film, 84 Charing Cross Road, based on Helene Hanffâs memoir of the same name.
A story of love and the love of books, the 1987 film 84 Charing Cross Road features Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins in stellar performances. Helen Hanff (Bancroft), a feisty New Yotk writer, posts a letter requesting some rare English classics to a small London book shop, Marks & Co. Booksellers. Frank Doel (Hopkins), the reserved English bookseller, answers her request, which begins a touching and humorous correspondence that spans two continents and two decades.
Intermingled with book requests, Helene Hanff exchanges observations, peeves, humor and recipes with the ladies of the shop and teases Mr Doel about his British manner of conducting business.
84 Charing Cross Road is breezy, bouncy, deeply moving and delightful sharing of joy between a book lover and her favorite book shop.
Book Talk at The Meadows will include discussion of the film, the book it was based on, recommendations of unique and noteworthy bookshops in our surrounding area, and information about the ânewâ Southbury Public Library.
Book Talk is open to the public and refreshments will be served after the program.
