Around The World Through Reading
Around The World Through Reading
By Laurie Borst
Second graders at Middle Gate School explored different types of literature through the âAround the World Through Readingâ project. Teacher Tisha McCoyâs students completed a project or wrote a report for each book they read. Books were selected from among seven genres of literature. Each genre equated to a continent, hence the âaround the worldâ theme.
Emily Newman said her favorite genre was biography. She read a book about gymnast Nadia Comenici. Monica Butlerâs favorite was American League Central. âI like baseball and the book had a lot of information,â she said.
Some of the projects the students created included an erupting volcano and a âGalileo Presentation,â where the students dropped rocks from the top of the playground equipment, emulating Galileoâs gravity experiments atop the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
