Where Reading Meets Eating
Where Reading Meets Eating
The C.H. Booth Library in Newtown is accepting entries for its second annual Incredible Edible Book Contest, which will take place Saturday, July 28, at the library.Â
Entries must be edible, family friendly, and must somehow be related to a book. It can be a representation of the book, or its characters, a pun on the title, or made to look like the book cover. The entries do not have to be cakes, or even require any cooking at all.
Last year, bakers and chefs of all ages created 37 entries, including Green Eggs and Ham, Miss Havishamâs moth-eaten wedding cake, Harry Potter and the Sorcererâs Scones, Shel Silversteinâs Giving Tree made out of cupcakes, and three very edible cups of tea made from cookies and ice cream cones.Â
A team of judges will be evaluate the works in a variety of categories and age levels, and also award the much coveted Silver Spoon to the winner of the Peoplesâ Choice Award.
To prepare for this fun event the library is hosting two hands-on demonstrations with Carol Collins. On Wednesday, July 11, from 2 to 3:30 pm, or Thursday, July 12, from 7 to 8:30 pm, Ms Collins will demonstrate ideas, techniques, and inspiration for the Incredible Edible Book Contest. She will show a slideshow of last yearâs entries, test the âconstructionabilityâ of Rice Crispies treats and fondant, demonstrate how to create characters out of veggies, and help build âLentil House in the Big Woods.â
There is a $5 supply fee for this class and advance registration is required as space is limited.
