Summer Fun Will Be The Plan At Museumâs Art Camps
WATERBURY â The Mattatuck Museumâs Art Camps, designed for children ages 5 to 12, have a special theme each week filled with plenty of fun and creativity. The themes for each week-long session are as follows:
July 10-14, morning session, 9 am to noon: âWait! Make Art Out of That!â â A week of creatively recycling everyday materials into toys. Instructor, Lori barker.
Afternoon session, 1 to 4 pm: âPuppeteersâ â Campers will learn about and make all types of puppets. Instructor, Eleanor Brasche.
July 17-21, day-long sessions from 9 am to 4 pm: âPapier Mache Peopleâ â Lear to create an assortment of zany figures using this time-honored technique. Instructor is Rosanne Shea.
July 24-28, morning sessions: âCapture the Worldâ â Fledgling photographers will learn the basics of capturing the world through the eye of a camera. Indoor, outdoor, still life, and subject photography will be covered. Instructor is Georgia Sheron.
July 24-28, afternoon sessions: âMobile Madnessâ â Create âmobile madnessâ using a variety of elements. Make sun catchers, sky galaxies, yard ornaments, and more, with instructor Eleanor Brasche.
July 31 to August 4, day-long sessions: âPaper Magic Weekâ â Learn how easy it is to make your own unique paper and then decorate it with rubber stamps you make.
August 7-11, morning sessions: âRock Artâ â Step back in time to the American Southwest of thousands of years ago to create rock art. Learn about Native American pictographs and petroglyphs, then try your hand at carving your own designs and painting them. Instructor is Elizabeth Schmidt.
August 7-11, afternoon sessions: âAdventures Under the Seaâ â Capture the magic of undersea life by creating sea creature costumes using a variety of materials and drawing sea animals both real and imaginary. Instructor is Raquel Figueiredo.
August 14-18, day-long sessions: âPens and Pallettesâ â Basic art techniques, illustration, sculpture making, using color to create light and depth. All will be explored in some very fun and creative ways, with instructor Marsha Doran.
August 21-25, morning sessions: âTotem Poles, Kachinas, & Shieldsâ â Learn about and then make these interesting artifacts from the Native American culture. Instructor is Elizabeth Schmidt.
August 21-25, afternoon sessions: âPop Artâ â Back by popular request, this camp session will teach how everyday objects can be turned into art. Designing logos and signs using silkscreening methods and building sculptures will also be taught by instructor Maura OâShea.
The cost per week for all-day sessions is $170; for half-day sessions the cost is $85. To register, call the museum at 203/753-0381, ext 10. All classes will take place on the grounds of the Mattatuck Museum, 144 West Main Street in Waterbury.
