Balancing on a ladder, local artist David Merrill works to repaint the American flag tree memorial at Newtown resident Howard Lasher’s property throughout the morning and afternoon of Monday, July 1.

The memorial, which can be seen from Dodgingtown Road (Route 302), has been the site of multiple ceremonies honoring the victims and first responders of the 9/11 attacks.

This year, the patriotic mural will be rejuvenated in color before the Fourth of July.
