Booth Summer Concerts Continuing
Washboard Slim and The Blue Lights are the Jug Band of the 21st Century. They have infused the traditional jug band music of the 1920s and 1930s with the energy of the rock nâ roll music of their own generation.
The band will be featured as the next concert in C.H. Booth Libraryâs Summer Concert Series on Friday, July 18. Concerts begin at 7 pm, and are presented on the libraryâs back lawn at 25 Main Street in Newtown. The lawn is open earlier for picnics.
Attendees should bring their own blankets or low lawn chairs for seating. In the event of rain, shows move into the libraryâs lower meeting room. There is no admission charge and all ages are welcome.
Washboad Slim and The Blue Lights play not only the beloved jug band classics but also go where no jug band has dared to tread: into the libraries of pop music from the turn of the century, polka, standards, and their own version of rock nâ roll called  âjugabilly.â
The versatility and crowd pleasing attitude of the five-member band makes them appropriate for a wide variety of settings: from smoky bars to outdoor concerts or private parties. Originally founded in 1986, they continue to perform at major folk and roots music festivals throughout North America. The bandâs first CD was released in 1996 to nationwide critical acclaim and they are presently working on a follow up recording.
WSBL remains inside the small group of premier jug bands performing today that are dedicated to maintaining the spirit, humor, creativity, and musicality of the jug band tradition of our American musical heritage.
The next concert â and final for the season â will be The Golden Angels Jazz Band, on August 15.
