House Concert By A Folk Singer
Judy Cook, who has been nominated Best Female Traditional Folk Singer in the Washington, D.C., area, will be in Newtown on Friday, July 18, for a house concert. The performance, called âSongs & Ballads of Americaâs Early Days: Strong Women, Fearless Men,â will begin at 8 pm.
Born in Virginia, the third of four children, Ms Cook grew up with singing from both parents and a love for music. As she took her place in the folk community, Ms Cook began researching the songs she loved and discovered the wealth of written, recorded, and personal sources for traditional songs and ballads.
Ms Cook began performing professionally in the early 1990s. Her first recording of unaccompanied traditional songs and ballads, If You Sing Songsâ¦, was released in 1998, the same year as her first singing tours. This was followed two years later by Far From the Lowlands. She has quickly come to be well respected on both sides of the Atlantic as a singer and propagator of the old songs.
Those attending the July 18 concert will be able to share the hearty laughter, the outrageous boasts and some poignant recollections of the women and men of Americaâs early days â the cowboys, sailors, pioneers, lumberjacks, soldiers and farmers.
There is limited seating for the concert and admission will be with prepaid reservations. Suggested donation is $10. Directions to the home where the concert will be taking place will be given when reservations are made.
