Newtown Warriors 3, Shelton 0: Eric Sutton threw a masterful complete game shutout to beat previously undefeated Shelton Sunday at Fairfield Hills Field. The win boosted the Warriorsâ record to 4-3-1 and moved the team into second place in the Connecticut Summer League. Newtown took a 1-0 third-inning lead when Colton Sposta was hit by a pitch and Troy Larsen crushed a long double to right center. In the fourth inning, Sutton drilled a double to left center, and Ben Stoller smacked an RBI single to center. Stoller stole his eighth base of the season, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on the Shelton pitcherâs errant pickoff throw to first base.
The Warriorsâ defense was solid. With a Shelton runner on third and no outs in the fourth inning, third baseman John Lebinski fielded a grounder and threw a strike to catcher Brock Chimileski, who made a nice tag to nail the runner. Chimileski threw to first baseman Stoller, who made a quick tag to catch the batter trying to scramble back to first and complete a double play. With Shelton threatening in the fifth inning, right fielder Larsen charged a one-hop line drive and threw to Stoller to nail a batter at first for the final out. Center fielder Sposta also made a beautiful defensive play with a running catch in left center. Sutton yielded five singles and just one walk, and mowed the side down in order in the final inning.
Newtown Warriors 9, Ridgefield 8: Down 8-2 in the fourth inning, the Warriors battled back for an emotional victory Saturday against the team that a few days earlier had eliminated them from the Bethel Jimmy Fund Tournament. Newtown took a 2-0 first-inning lead at Newtown Middle School Field on singles by Brock Chimileski, Eric Sutton and John Lebinski, and an RBI grounder by Ben Stoller. But Ridgefield scored two in the second inning and six in the third inning to take a commanding lead. Stoller started the Newtown comeback by blasting a long triple to right center and scoring on an RBI grounder by Austin Ekstrom. Relief pitcher Colton Sposta, who entered the game in the third inning, threw 68 pitches and shut out Ridgefield the rest of the game.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Newtown rallied to tie the game with five runs. Chimileski, Lebinski and Ryan OâKeefe walked; Ekstrom and Sposta rapped clutch singles, and Stoller and Matt Spencer slapped balls that were mishandled by infielders. In the seventh inning, Chimileski threw a base stealer out at third to end a Ridgefield threat. He then led off the bottom of the inning by crushing a long triple to right center and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Newtown Warriors 5, Aspetuck 5: The Warriors dominated the entire game but had to settle for a tie when the game was called for darkness last Friday night at the Redding Boys & Girls Club Field. Newtown pitcher John Lebinski hurled four no-hit innings, striking out nine batters, as the Warriors raced out to a 5-0 lead. Newtown scored three in the first inning on walks to Max Temple and Colton Sposta, singles by Nicky Sajovic, Lebinski and Austin Ekstrom, and an RBI groundout by Matt Spencer. In the second inning, Brandon Cooper ripped a single, moved to second on a Temple bunt, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, Temple bounced an RBI single to right to score Ryan OâKeefe, who had walked and moved to second on a bunt by Troy Larsen. Aspetuck rallied to tie the game, but Sposta came on in relief to get the final out with two runners on base in the final inning.
Ridgefield 8, Newtown Warriors 5: Trailing 8-3, the Warriors seventh-inning comeback fell short last week in the Jimmy Fund Tournament at Brookfieldâs Huckleberry Field. Newtownâs Wyatt DePuy singled with one out in the seventh and scored
when John Lebinski slammed an RBI double to right center. Brandon Cooper followed by drilling an RBI single, his second hit of the game. DePuy also had two singles. Austin Ekstrom ripped an RBI single in the second inning.
