Sen Clinton Raises Funds For Maloney

(AP) –– US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton helped raise tens of thousands of dollars Sunday for the campaign of Congressman James Maloney.

The New York Democrat spoke to about 200 people at a fundraiser at the Fireside Inn.

Rep Maloney, D-5th District, is battling US Rep Nancy Johnson, R-6th District, in a nationally watched race for the new 5th District seat. The 6th District was eliminated during redistricting in December because the state’s population did not grow as fast as those in other states.

Most people at the fundraiser paid $250 per person. Forty to 50 others paid $1,000 apiece to attend a private reception with Clinton before the dinner.

Maloney estimated the event raised more than $100,000 for his campaign.

He also basked in Clinton’s praise.

“You can go down every single issue and you can see the difference Jim has made and will make,” Sen Clinton said.

Mrs Clinton told the crowd that the public needs a few select reasons to return Mr Maloney to Washington on Election Day in November.

“The first reason is because of who Jim is. He’s a very stand-up guy,” Sen Clinton said.

She also joked, referring to Maloney’s physical size, “Besides, when he stands up, you can’t miss him.”
