New Officers Installed For

Knights Of Columbus Virgilius Council 185

On June 21, the Newtown Knights of Columbus held an installation of new officers for 2006-07. The well-attended family affair took place in The Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall.

The event was conducted by outgoing District Deputy Bob Lamontagne and his replacement, Greg Horan. The benediction was delivered by Pastor Robert Weiss of St Rose of Lima Church, who is also the council’s chaplain.

Special thanks were bestowed upon outgoing Grand Knight Len Moritz and his wife, Linda, for their dedication to the council and a huge personal commitment to the Knights and the parish. Mr Moritz is spearheading the new storage and meeting facility the council is constructing.

The new officers for 2006-07 are as follows: John Moulder, grand knight; Jim Tevnan, deputy grand knight; Joe Murphy, chancellor; Larry Rice, recorder; Tim Haas, treasurer; Chris Spalvieri, lecturer; Art Bennett, advocate; and Joe McElgunn, warden.

Also elected for 2006-07 were Jud Doyle, trustee third year; Tom Chiaramonte, trustee second year; Len Moritz, trustee first year; Jerry Finnegan, inside guard; Charlie Nostrand, outside guard; and Fr Weiss, chaplain.

The Knights are highly visible in the community. They are responsible for numerous charitable initiatives such as holiday meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas, gathering and distributing food and clothing for the many shelters in the area, and repairing homes for people in need.

Over the past few years the Knights have added community Friday Night Fish Fry dinners during Lent and an Oktoberfest featuring the Newtown-Sandy Hooks vintage base ball team.

In August, the Knights will provide security and distribute food for as many as 800 teenagers from across Fairfield County who will be taking part in a daylong celebration of their faith at a diocese youth rally called “Fan The Fire.” Most of the teens will have attended the annual weekend retreat Steubenville East in Attleboro, Mass.
