Michael Dennis, a sophomore at Newtown High School, broke 91 out of 100 clay pigeons to finish first in the Scholastic Clay Target Program at the Connecticut State Shoot and Skeet Tournament last weekend at the Hartford Gun Club.

Finishing runner-up to Dennis was Michael Terry of Weston, who scored an 89, and finishing third was Mat Apgar of Fairfield.

Their team, “The Grateful Lead,” also fields Junior Division shooters such as CJ Ehrentraut (age 11 from Beacon Falls), Stephen Michael Apgar (age 11 from Middlebury), and Kyle Matthews (age 10 from Fairfield).

These versatile shotgunners also competed in the “Never on Sunday” Skeet shoot at Fairfield County Fish & Game Club in Newtown with Mat Apgar grabbing first place with 85 of 100 targets broken. Terry and Dennis tied for second place with a 73.

The Junior Division boys’ scores ranged from 35 to 53. For all six members of the team, this was their first registered Skeet event.

The “Grateful Lead” team – sponsored by the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation – plans more multi-discipline competitions in July plus appearances at the Connecticut State Skeet Shoot, as well as the Connecticut State Sporting Clays Championships in August.

The Scholastic Clay Target Program has more than 8,000 elementary and high school students across the country who compete on local, regional, and national levels.

Earlier this month, Dennis finished first in the Scholastic Clay Target Program at the Pahquioque Club at Wooster Mountain in Danbury. Dennis, 15, notched 83 out of 100 targets in his first round of clay pigeons ever.

Terry, Ehrentraut and Stephen Michael Apgar also competed.
