Hot Stuff ... Inferno Wins 12 Year Old Division Of Jimmy Fund Baseball Tournament

The Newtown Inferno baseball team won the 12 year old 46/60 division in the Jimmy Fund Tournament held recently in Bethel. Newtown won all three of its games, outscoring opponents 26-7.

In the first game against Shepaug, Owen McInerney went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, Henry Primavera was 3-for-4 with a double, Harry Eppers went 2-for-3, and Patrick Godino 2-for-2, including a clutch two-out single scoring McInerney and Eppers in the fourth inning to give the Inferno a 3-1 lead. Colby Olson pitched four strong innings in relief of McInerney. Olson struck out 5 and allowed only 3 hits in the 7-1 victory.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first in the second game, against New Canaan, the Inferno got singles from Jacob Steinebrey and Henry Primavera before CJ Shambelan and Owen McInerney hit RBI singles to tie the game at 3. Newtown took the lead for good, scoring 3 times in the third inning when Harry Eppers lined a two-run single to right. Ethan Aug then singled to right scoring Eppers to tie the game.

Newtown added 5 more runs in the fifth inning en-route to an 11-3 victory. McInerney picked up the win by striking out 7 batters in 3 innings of work. Owen also continued his hot hitting with 3 more hits. Newtown slapped out 17 hits in the game. Shambelan went 3-for-4, Steinebrey, Primavera, and Eugene Citrano were 2-for-3, and Godino was 2-for-2. Adam Beckett struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings.

In the championship game played on June 21 against Shepaug, the host Inferno scored 4 runs in the first inning and held on to win 6-3. Patrick Godino allowed only one batter to reach first base in 4 innings to pick up the win.

Colby Olson went 3-for-3 at the plate and Player of the Tournament, Owen McInerney, notched 2 more hits in the game and finishing 8-for-9 in the tournament. Shepaug had the tying run at the plate in the sixth inning but McInerney, playing catcher, picked off the runner at second base to end the game.

Evan Kohlsaat hit a triple in the first inning, Henry Primavera went 2-for-4 and Ethan Aug had another 2-out RBI single in the fourth inning to pace the Inferno.
