Dr Roger Moore Has Retirement In Sight
Dr Roger Moore Has Retirement In Sight
By John Voket
Dr Roger Moore, a local optometrist who has been a fixture in town since 1984, is retiring. But he plans to spend a lot of his off time looking through a different type of lens.
âOne of my hobbies is astronomy,â said Dr Moore from his 14 Church Hill Road office June 26. âSo I plan to spend a lot more of my time gazing at the stars.â
And while the friendly eye doctor will not be a fixture at his local shop after July 2, his planned last day of work, his entire staff, including his wife, Pattie, will continue working at the practice for the new owner, Dr Kelly McGlynn. Even Dr Moore concedes in a letter that he distributed to his patients that he may continue working part-time.
He is also looking forward to spending more time enjoying his home on Lake Lillinonah, and one of his other pursuits, water skiing.
âIâve been in town since 1984 and in that time Iâve made so many great friends and have so many great patients,â Dr Moore said. âBut Iâm not going anywhere, Iâll just be spending a lot more time hanging around the house.â
While Dr Moore becomes acquainted with the life of a retiree, Dr McGlynn and her fiancé, Erik Ferjentik, will be getting to know Newtown. The couple recently relocated here from the metro Boston area where she worked with the Cambridge Eye Doctors practice.
Dr McGlynn did her undergraduate work in biology at Virginia Tech, after which she went on to earn her OD at Bostonâs New England College of Optometry. During the period when she worked for the Cambridge group, Dr McGlynn was recognized for managing the single most successful branch among the companyâs 16 offices for two years in a row.
âIâve only been here about a week, but I love Newtown so far. Everybody is so nice,â she said during a visit to the office this week. âItâs a big change from metro Boston, but Iâm happy to be closer to my brother and sister who live in Manhattan. And my fiancé is from Fairfiled, so heâs much closer to all his family.â
In her off time, Dr McGlynn stays busy with her new Vizsla puppy, as well as her other hobbies â baking, photography and, occasionally, rock climbing.
While Pattie Moore plans to continue serving the practice as an optician until at least the end of the year, optometric technicians Holly Kendrick and Amy Holcomb are also planning to remain with the practice, where Ms Kendrick has been working for nearly 24 years and Ms Holcomb has been employed since 1999.
