Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*CLOSED FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY, July 4.

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

*BINGO: July 11 and July 25 at 1 pm.

*SOCIAL GATHERING pot luck will be the third Tuesday, July 17, from 4 to 6 pm, at the center. Vegetable and meat lasagnas, complete with Italian bread, salad, summer fruit, and lemonade will be served. Bring a dessert to share. Cost is $5.

*CRAFT CLASS: July 17 and August 14 at 1 pm to make a Sumi-e, Chinese brush painting.

*BILL MICHAELS will entertain with old and new songs combined with his wit and humor on Wednesday, July 18, at 1 pm.

*OPEN MICROPHONE on Thursday, July 26, from 1 to 3 pm; bring you own instrument or use one of ours, such as keyboard, guitar, tambourine, Indian Dholak and other assorted hand percussion. Entertainment and ice cream are compliments of the Visiting Angels, Living Assistance Services.

*On August 7, depart at 10:45 am for CONNECTICUT CRUISING. Lunch at Abbott’s Lobsters of Noank, Conn., and then relax on Seapony LLC for an hour and a half cruise on the Thames River in New London. Cost is $75.

 

Day Trips

*Summer Festival at PLATZL BRAUHAUS in Pomona, N.Y., Tuesday, July 10. Enjoy three meals, a dip in the pool, shuffleboard, bocci, or listen to the band play. Bring your swimsuit. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $75 per person.

*On Thursday, July 19 visit the New England Carousel Museum and then have a lunch buffet and cruise down the Connecticut River on the Lady Katherine. Next to Lyman Orchards and visit the “Apple Barrel.” Depart 9 am; cost is $66.

*On Tuesday, July 31, view PLYMOUTH ROCK at Plymouth Memorial Park, Lunch at Issac’s on the waterfront, a tour of Plymouth Harbor on a Mississippi-style paddle boat and visit Cranberry World at Ocean Spray. Cost is $74; depart from Senior Center at 7 am.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit in Philadelphia, July 25–27, depart 7:30 am from Senior Center, $419 per person double; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Monday: July 2: BBQ chicken quarter, potato salad, green beans, buttermilk biscuit, lemon cookie.

Tuesday: July 3: Footlong hot dog and roll with chili, Boston baked beans, coleslaw, mustard, watermelon wedge.

Wednesday: Closed for the Fourth of July.

Thursday: Chicken piccata, egg noodles, California blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: July 9: Spinach quiche, diced carrots, tossed salad with tomato wedges and French dressing, soft breadstick, mandarin oranges.

Tuesday: July 10: Beef stroganoff served over egg noodles, broccoli florets, wheat dinner roll, pineapple juice, peach pie.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.
