Newtown Soccer Club Wraps Up Season With Strong Showing At Connecticut Cup Finals
The Newtown Soccer Club wrapped up its spring season with quite a showing as two teams headed to the 2022 Connecticut Cup Finals, sponsored by the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association, in Farmington on June 18.
Newtown Soccer Club’s U13 boys were named Cup Champions with a 4-2 win over Simsbury in the final. Luca Glazer had two goals and Alex Sari and Duncan Kolb also scored. Solid goaltending was provided by Luke Libero.
Coach Nick Booth praised both teams and spoke highly of the game at the prize ceremony.
“The two best teams in the state made it to this game today, and credit goes to both teams,” said Booth, turning to his squad. “As for my team, these boys have worked hard, shown a lot of commitment and drive, improved tremendously, and they deserve this win. Well done, boys.”
Under the direction of Coach Matt Cotto, the U19 boys’ squad competed against East Hartford, and was named the Connecticut Cup runners-up after a hard-fought 3-2 loss in a game that went into extended time. The two teams traded leads throughout regulation time, with Alex Braholi scoring both Newtown tallies, one on a penalty and one on a free kick. East Hartford scored the decisive goal late in the second half in extended time.
“I am extremely proud of the group of young men that I had the chance to coach this spring season. From the beginning to the end, it was truly a blessing to have them. Their work ethic, determination, passion, character, and most of all unity, made this season special,” Cotto said. “Their never-back-down attitude really defined our season down the stretch, especially in the closing league games to solidify our place as league champions. From start to finish in every match, they left no stone unturned.
“To come into a group of young men who have been together playing for so long, to have the chance to send them off on a high note is something I am honored to have had the chance to do. Despite the result Saturday, we have so much to be proud of,” Cotto added. “To the 13 seniors leaving the club and going on to college, I am immensely proud to have shared this time with them and I wish them nothing but the best in all they do. I am sure they will all go on to do great things and continue to represent Newtown in an exemplary way. Thank you to all the families and fans of Newtown Soccer for your endless support until the end.”
