The Newtown Nonprofit Council (NNC) had its monthly virtual meeting to get news updates from local organizations on Monday, June 20, with program coordinators at the C.H. Booth Library.

Reference librarian Lily MacHugh, who recently transitioned as the council’s new moderator, was joined by the library director, Douglas Lord.

While it was a smaller group compared to most meetings, those who did attend voiced their recent happenings to one another.

Newtown Rotary Club President Alex Villamil shared that his organization will have its Pass the Gavel event on June 28 and that he will continue another term as president.

He also noted that he has been in communication with a local family in need of help raising money for medical care expenses after a recent car accident.

While his group, and many others that he has spoken to thus far, cannot directly give funds to individuals, the members of different nonprofits can donate separately.

Villamil said that the family has a GoFundMe set up and that he will discuss this topic more at the Newtown Nonprofit Council’s meeting in July. He told The Newtown Bee separately that the family is in the process of seeking asylum status in the US.

Newtown Historical Society Board President Melissa Houston mentioned to the council that her organization needs volunteer docents.

She explained that they have had interest in junior docents, ages 13 to 18, and senior docents, college-age students, but that adult docents have been difficult to come by.

“We’ll train people,” Houston said. “We have a whole docent manuscript.”

She mentioned they are also hoping to have an education coordinator soon for the Newtown Historical Society.

Friends of the Edmond Town Hall Co-Chair Julie Brunelle chatted with Houston about the recent second grade tour that was done independently from the schools.

“Everyone wants their kids to have a strong tie to Newtown,” Houston said about the tour group’s desire to visit the town landmarks, such as the Matthew Curtiss House and Edmond Town Hall.

Brunelle informed the council that in addition to that, the Friends of the Edmond Town Hall participated in the Newtown Congregational Church’s Community Tag Sale earlier this month and raised $185.

Closing the meeting, Lord reminded everyone that the Friends of the C.H. Booth Library will not be accepting donations until July 17, because it is preparing for its 46th Annual Book Sale, which will take place next month.

NNC meets virtually on the third Monday of each month at 10 am. There will be a technical assistance meeting through Zoom for individuals to learn more about the NNC’s volunteer site called “Get Connected, Newtown!” on Monday, June 27, at 2 pm.
